The Role of NGOS in Enhancing Health Delivery System in Africa

The pitiable health and economic conditions of an average African, has continued to defy all known civilized and economic logic. This is against the backdrop of abundant human and natural resources available in the continent, yet Africa remains backward. There is no where in the continent that can be said to be free of most of these avoidable illnesses, yet, most governments in Africa seem helpless in the face of massive corruption and the looting of the collective wealth of the African people. It is against the failure of many African governments to enhance qualitative health for the citizens that it becomes imperative for non-governmental organizations to raise up to the occasion. They have done a lot in this regard in the past and a lot still needs to be done, if only Africa will locate her place in the global arena. This paper, therefore, seek to highlight the roles some of these NGOs have played, identify some of their constraints and strengths. It will also seek to point out ways on how their efforts can be better co-ordinated with a view to giving the health delivery system in Africa a boost, so that the life of an average common man can be protected from avoidable illnesses, such as malaria, cholera, polio and other poverty induced illnesses.
