Songs & Politics of the Lunatic: Okekwe's Foray into the Malaise of a Nation

Issues pertaining to health have continued to generate a lot of attention globally. This is more so on the African continent where limited economic resources tend to affect health care facilities and delivery. Obviously here, a vast number of people can barely afford minimal health services. But this is not the angle from which Promise Okekwe, a prominent Nigerian creative writer, contributes to the on going discourse. For this female writer, her nation is truly sick as it suffers from diverse maladies inflicted upon it by her leaders, past and present. This paper would thus examine the issues of a nation's malaise as raised by the last three stories contained in her collection, Soul Journey into the Night. The matter takes on added significance for us because in the stories titled "Songs of a Lunatic" and "The Politics of a Lunatic", we hear very directly from a man labeled 'lunatic' by the society. Ironically it is through his demented vision that we uncover the dimensions and nature of these ailments.
