WARS AND CONFLICTS IN AFRICA 2008 CONFERENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN, MARCH 28-30, 2008

Title:   Conflicts and violence in Africa: Prospects and challenges to the Christian
Church

Abstract
The most important mission of the Christian Church (hereafter “the church”) in Africa is to preach the Gospel and to serve those who are most vulnerable and needy in society. The church’s vision has always been the creation of communities founded on the Christian principles of freedom, justice, and peace.  However, for quite long Africa has continued to degenerate into a scene of conflict and violence. The issue of these conflicts and violence has come to be seen as an inevitable part of the human condition in Africa. Conflicts and violence have become a legacy that reproduces itself in subsequent generations as the conditions that nurtured it in the previous generations are allowed to continue. In this article the author argues that:

  1. Conflicts and violence are often predictable and are preventable.
  2. The church that has been in existence in Africa since the nineteenth-century should have both a special interest and a key role to play in conflict management in Africa.
