Image Index > Courtship Scenes > Man Watches Activity At The Gym

DESCRIPTION
The sponge and reticule hanging from the wall suggest a gymnastic setting. A man turns back to look at something interesting that catches his eye, perhaps to be imagined as the scenes on the sides of the cup. The depiction of an act of looking may help foreground the erotics of vision illustrated on the sides. Note the inscription next to the man's staff, reading "the boy is beautiful."
