I work as a producer at MBC, Middle East Broadcasting Company. I also have another job as a florist in my flower shop. The daily routine I have is quite long, because as a producer I sometimes have shifts, two to three times a week, which are twelve hours long. Also I have long hours because as a florist I have to go to a place called New Convent Garden where they sell wholesale flowers and I buy the flowers from there and then go to the shop and cut them and tidy them up. By that time my helper comes to the shop and then I go to my other job, which is as a producer at the television station.

Music is very important to me for my whole being. I learn a lot of Palestinian songs, old ones from women in the refugee camps in Palestine, Lebanon and Syria. I feel I'm flying in the sky but also I feel very earthy with my feet holding me to the ground and I feel the more I fly to the sky in my singing, the more I hold on the floor, the ground, the earth and therefore, to my roots. Through music I get a sense of identity and belonging I believe that the Palestinians be they in Palestine or the Diaspora, it's important to hold on to their identity and belonging especially in the light of what is happening at the moment politically. And in my case the language through which I hold on to my identity and belonging is through music. I've sung in North America, in Europe, lots of Arab countries and around the UK and in London.

I'm a freelance legal interpreter. My services are required by police courts. A typical situation would be an interview room at a police station. There are four people present: the interviewing police officer, the suspect, his or her solicitor and me as the interpreter. What I like about this job is the responsibility placed upon me. And I also learn a lot about the English judicial system and the mentality of the police officers and I also like the fees paid to interpreters. But this job has its ups and downs. Some of the pressures the interpreter is subjected to are to lend assistance to detainees from the detainee himself, asking you to do him favors. Added to that, it is sometimes difficult for the interpreter to keep calm due to interruptions, either from the police officer who is interviewing the suspect or vice versa.

My name is Jinan Kirwi, I was born 1964. I have two children, my mother is American and my father is Iraqi. I was born in Iraq. I felt I was the daughter of a foreigner in Iraq, I was a bit different to others. When I went to the States I was always the daughter of an Arab but when I came here (London) I was like any other foreigner because there are many foreigners here. I've been here for twelve years.
