Teacher's Notes for the Politics and Economy Lesson

This unit briefly describes the political system of Egypt as well as provides a brief description of the overall economic strengths and weaknesses of the country. Egypt is classified by the World Bank as a "lower middle income" country, meaning that it is just under the midpoint on the scale between rich and poor nations.

Students may wish to:

  1. Do research on the Egyptian political system. Have them create an organizational chart of the government organs and how they relate to one another. They may wish to present their findings to the class.

  2. Have students research the electoral process in Egypt. Have them research topics such as who has the right to vote? How are votes counted (i.e., is every vote counted, or is it an electoral college system like the U.S.?)? Are there different systems for different kinds of elections (parliamentary vs. presidential)? How fair are elections in Egypt?

  3. Have students read the Egyptian newspaper al-Ahram on line, which publishes a weekly English version (http://www.ahram-eg.com/weekly/). What are the current important issues in the country?

  4. Have students research Egyptian industry. What are the main imports and exports into Egypt? What are the main products that are manufactured in the country? What kinds of natural resources does Egypt have, and what does it lack? Which sectors provide the main source of Egypt's income?
