Isabelle
et les enfants surfeur
Les mamans du quartier la surnomment "Madame
Internet". Depuis mai 1999, Isabelle Autran, 32 ans, anime et
dirige l'association CracBoumHue.

Activity A
Step 1. Read the main title and subtitle of this article. Based on
this information, write three ideas you would expect to find in this
reading.
1.
2.
3.
Step 2. Share your ideas with 2 or 3 classmates. Did you come up with
similar information? Did your classmates think of something you would
like to add to your list?
Step 3. Now quickly skim the two sections to determine whether or
not the information you anticipated is present. Report back to the
class what you did or did not find.
Activity B
Step 1. Since the two sections of this reading are rather long, it
would be best to read it section by section. After reading each section
fairly quickly, pause to collect your thougts by writing a sentence
that captures the main idea of the section. Compare your sentences
with those of a classmate. Do you agree on the main ideas?
Step 2. Go back and reread both sections, paying more attention to
the details. Using a colored pen or highlighter, identify key words
or phrases that will help you remember what you have read. At the
end of each section, look at what you have highlighted. Does it spark
your memory? Compare the words and phrases you have highlighted with
those of several classmates. Have you chosen different words?
Step 3. Based on what you have read, check off the statements which
are true.
Isabelle's neighbors call her "Madame Internet" because
she spends all of her time surfing the web.
Isabelle's daughter often invited neighborhood friends over to play
on the computer.
Isabelle founded CracBoumHue in December, 1998.
From the content of the article, it is obvious that Isabelle enjoys
working with children.
Step 4. Complete the following statements.
1. In December 1998, Isabelle...
a. founded CracBoumHue.
b. quit her job.
c. bought a computer
for her home.
2. Isabelle is particularly proud of...
a. the contact
she established with people of a small African village.
b. her own daughter's
ability to use the computer.
c. having quit
her job.
3. Isabelle's plans for the future include...
a. finding a new
job.
b. creating web
sites for shop-owners of her neighborhood.
c. moving her
family to Belleville.
Step 5. With 2 or 3 classmates, make a list of all the different activities
these children engage in when using the internet. Then share your
list with the rest of the class, adding to your list whatever activities
you might have left out. Finally, as a class, indicate if each activity
is purely for fun or educational as well.
Step 6. The first paragraph states that Isabelle's objective in founding
CracBoumHue was to introduce children to new technologies. As a class,
identify the information in the article that supports the fact that
she has indeed met this objective.
