Elbridge Gerry

Elbridge Gerry

Elbridge Gerry, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation, served as a delegate from Massachusetts to the Constitutional Convention of 1787. He opposed the proposed Constitution on the grounds that the Convention was called to amend the Articles, not draft a new document. He refused to sign and voiced his opposition to the Constitution during the ratification process.
