Perhaps best known for being the first to sign the Declaration of Independence, John Hancock also served as President of the Second Continental Congress and of the Congress of the Confederation. Although initially opposed to the proposed Constitution, John Hancock endorsed it on the grounds that a Bill of Rights be included once it was adopted. His endorsement helped win a narrow victory for the Constitution in Massachusetts, making it the sixth state to ratify.
