This chart is designed to show changes in the number of staff in Congress over a 110 year period. The X-axis represents the year; the Y-axis the number of staff. The four chart lines represent both House and Senate member staff, and both House and Senate committee staff. In general, all types of staff have significantly increased. The House member staff numbers have had the largest increase in numbers, followed by Senate member staff. Both House and Senate committee staffs have had a modest increase. Overall, the number of staff stabilized during the 1980s and has declined modestly since then.
