Total uniformed U.S. military personnel number about one and a half million worldwide. Of those, just over 1 million are in the United States, and nearly half a million are stationed around the globe. The three regions depicted here account for the bulk of American troops abroad, with more than 100,000 troops in Europe, about 100,000 in East Asia and the Pacific, and 200,000 in the North Africa/Near East/South Asia area (with most of the latter engaged in the Iraq war).
