In this recording, produced for Constitution Day 2006, UT-Austin President and professor of law William Powers reflects on the role of the judiciary in the U.S. Constitution's distinct system of democracy. The Constitution exempted the judiciary from the rules of electoral politics. But the judiciary, he argues, is an essential part of democratic governance in the U.S., particularly in its role as interpreter, arbiter, and defender of the rights of the people.
