The presidential election of 2000 was an extremely close and disputed election. Much of the controversy centered on voting procedures in Florida, one example being the "butterfly ballot" which some claimed was intentionally confusing, with the result that voters who intended to vote for Al Gore inadvertently voted for Pat Buchanan. This is an image of the butterfly ballot. George Bush's name is first, with a number 3 by it and an arrow pointing to the first punch hole. Al Gore's name is second, with a number 5 by it, and an arrow pointing to the third punch. Between the first and third punch hole is the punch hole with an arrow on the opposite page going to Pat Buchanan, number 4.
