Description:

This course, which is the last in a sequence of four courses, builds upon HEB 313K and involves a study of Biblical Hebrew combined with an introduction to Mishnaic and Modern Hebrew. The historical development of the Hebrew language is the focus of the course, and the texts studied are taken from the Hebrew Bible, the Mishna, poems of the Golden Age in Spain, and Modern Hebrew poetry and prose.

Grading:

Class attendance and participation: 30%

Quizzes : 15%

Midterm exam : 15%

Homework assignments: 20%

Final project: 20%

Prerequisites:

HEB 313K (or its equivalent).

Texts:

A Hebrew Bible

A Hebrew/English dictionary or a concordance

A course packet, available at the Duplication Services store of the Texas Union

Please note the following:

•You must have a bible and a dictionary or a concordance with you in class.

•Perfect attendance is required. Excessive tardiness or absence from more than three classes, unless justified, will significantly reduce your class participation grade. Unjustified absence for more than nine hours will result in a failing grade, regardless of grades accumulated in the course. Two tardy arrivals or each absence beyond the first three will reduce the participation grade by one point.

•Active participation is expected from all students. Perfect attendance does not guarantee a full class participation grade.

•Assignments should be turned in promptly on due date. Late homework will not be accepted for grade. No make-ups will be given for quizzes.

•You are expected to spend at least nine hours a week on homework and class preparations.

•A teaching assistant will provide support at FAC 27.
