HEB 508: First Year Biblical Hebrew 1, Quiz and Test Information
- Quiz 1, 9/17/03:
- The Hebrew alphabet (fill in the missing letters, in Hebrew or transliteration)
- Readings from chapters 1 and 2: Translate into English two verses (the text will be provided in both Hebrew and transliteration; the translation should be in good English, but as close to the Hebrew original as possible)
- Write two short essays. The topics will be chosen from the following four: The definite article; BGDKPT variants; Construct chains; Hebrew sentence structure and the Biblical narrative structure. Be prepared to give examples for each point you make. The essays should be no longer than one or two paragraphs long.
- Quiz 2, 9/24/03:
- Readings from chapters 1 and 2: Translate into English two verses (the text will be provided in both Hebrew and transliteration; the translation should be in good English, but as close to the Hebrew original as possible)
- Make segholate nouns from given roots (remember the effect that gurrurals have on the adjacent vowels!)
- Add the definite article to given words (focus on the two variants of the article, the one with a short vowel+gemination, and the one with a long vowel)
- Identify forms with suffixes of the prepositions "to", "in", "of".
- Midterm, 10/16/03 (see midterm review sheet):
- Readings from chapters 1-4-- translate into English 3 verses
- Add the definite article, the conjunction "and" and the prepositions "in" and "to" to nouns
- Form construct chains with given nouns
- Identify nouns and prepositions with possessive suffixes
- Provide the plural of singular nouns, and singular forms of plural nouns
- Create segholate nouns from given roots
- Provide the four participle forms for a given root
- Quiz 3, 11/5/03
- Readings: Chapter 6. Translate into English two verses, provide the Hebrew word which complements sentences such as "God placed man in ___________"
- Identify verb forms from the strong verb in the Qal (Pa'al) pattern for root, person, and aspect (practice in class on Monday)
- Quiz 4, 11/19/03
- Readings: Chapters 8-9. Translate into English two verses, provide the Hebrew word/words which completes given sentences.
- Identify verb forms from the strong verb (roots: qof tet lamed, qof shin resh) in all patterns for root, pattern, person, and aspect (practice in class on Monday)
- Quiz 5, 12/3/03
- Readings: Chapters 8-10. Translate into English two verses, provide the Hebrew word/words which completes given sentences.
- Identify verb forms from the strong verb (roots: qof tet lamed, qof shin resh) in all patterns for root, pattern, person, and aspect
- Final exam, 12/13/03, Parlin 204, 7-10 PM
- Readings from chapters 6-10-- translate into English 3 verses
- Answer questions/complete sentences based on the readings from chapters 6-10
- Add the definite article, the conjunction "and" and the prepositions "in", "from", and "to" to nouns
- Form construct chains with given nouns
