Description:
This course, which is the second in a sequence of four courses, builds upon First Year Biblical Hebrew I and involves a thorough study of Biblical Hebrew grammar. Emphasis is placed on the verb system and the rules of sentence structure. The same analytical approach adopted for the first semester is applied, but the texts selected are expanded to include Biblical chapters of poetic, legal and prophetic nature. Among the texts selected for the course are the Ten Commandments, chapters from the book of Leviticus, Psalms 23, 27, and 121, Proverbs 8 and 10, and Isaiah 53.
Grading:
Class attendance and participation: 20%
Quizzes: 30%
Midterm exam: 15%
Homework assignments: 15%
Final exam (written and oral): 20%
Prerequisites:
HEB 508 (or its equivalent) with a minimum grade of "C."
Texts:
Raizen, Lehmann and Hewitt. 1999. Biblical Hebrew: An Analytical Introduction. San Antonio: Wings Press
An English translation of the Hebrew Bible (a version of your choice)
Please note the following:
Perfect attendance is required. Excessive tardiness or absence from more than three classes, unless justified, will significantly reduce your class participation grade. Unjustified absence for more than ten hours will result in a failing grade, regardless of grades accumulated in the course. Two tardy arrivals or each absence beyond the first three will reduce the participation grade by one point.
Active participation is expected from all students. Perfect attendance does not guarantee a full class participation grade.
Assignments should be turned in promptly on due date. Late homework will not be accepted for grade. No make-ups will be given for quizzes. Your lowest homework grade and your lowest quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester.
You are expected to spend at least nine hours a week on homework and class preparations.
A teaching assistant will provide support at FAC 27. You are required to meet with the TA four times during the semesterplease sign up early for these individual sessions, and note that two of them must take place before the midterm exam. Failing to keep an appointment with the TA will be considered an absence.
