General Sites on HomophonesThis is Evan Antworth's list of homophones in "General American English" based on the book Handbook of Homophones by William Cameron Townsend (1975). The speaker's dialect becomes critical in determining what sounds "the same". What is a homonym to one person may not be one to another.
This page from the RHL School Web site includes twenty sentences with pairs of words underlined in each that are either synonyms, antonyms, homonyms or homographs. Answers are given for the first four sentences. Teachers should find this exercise useful, and may want to explore some of the many other excellent teaching resources provided free of charge by the RHL School (accessed from a link on this page).
Students will learn a lot about homonyms by playing this matching game. Mona, who created this activity, also uses these words in Concentration, Flashcards (Java/non-Java), and Word Search games. This page is part of the Quia site, which we highly recommend. We believe it could be invaluable to teachers in almost any discipline. updated February 21 2004 |
