Teaching Internship in German Schools
The Teaching Internship in German Schools is a 2-month summer program offered through the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin (UT). It provides one advanced German student with the opportunity to work as a visiting intern in schools in Darmstadt, Germany (in the state of Hesse). In Darmstadt (city photos by former interns: Darmstadt), the UT student will observe instruction (Video Clips) in a range of grade levels and assist a highly experienced teacher in an English as a Foreign Language class (at the middle and high school level) at the Erich-Kästner-Schule (EKS) (photos: Erich Kästner-Schule). The completion of this internship is for academic credit (GER 379).
Elements of the program: The internship course has three phases:
- 1) prior to departing the student will make a comparative study of the German and US-American systems of schooling and higher education,
- 2) from early May to early July the student will be in Darmstadt, Germany working in the schools for 8 weeks (and possibly visiting schools in Berlin and in Würzburg, Bavaria),
- 3) a final written report is due at the end of the summer term.
Eligibility: The internship is open to any advanced UT student of German. Preference is given to students who have participated in the German Outreach Program and who have had little opportunity to spend time in Germany.
Application: Follow directions listed on this downloadable document: teaching_intern_appl.pdf
