Bronze Flagons

Besançon Flagon.

Besancon flagon

Drawing of part of Celtic design

Besancon flagon

Several views of imported Etruscan bronze flagon from Besançon (France), with incised Celtic designs.

The incised patterns include a palmette motif that echoes the handle attachment in an entirely new fashion, while the rest of the vehicle is covered with swirling yin-yang circles, teardrop commas and other purely local motifs that contrast jarringly with the simple, rigid Etruscan palmette.

Height 25.5 cm.
Date: ca. 350 B.C.E. (incised elements)
