Narcocorridos

                                                                         From Sinaloa to Los Angeles

The present state of the corrido, the unique version of the ballad tradition surviving in the US and Mexico has taken a startling turn. What became famous initially, for cattle drives and hero celebrations, fueled by cultural conflict along the Texas-Mexico border currently has adopted a far less romantic mantel.

The modern narcocorrido has its origins in corridos with smuggling themes, both alcohol and narcotics, as well as other contraband goods. What differentiates these past corridos from those enjoying popularity today with young people concerns style-the songs of today are far brasher and bolder in their drug references more closely resembling gangster rap than the heroic remembrances of old.
