Gregorio Cortez

Mexico City Broadside

          Espanol

          English

Como decimos, así es,
en mil novecientos uno,
el día veintidós de junio
fue capturado Cortés.

As we say, so it is;
In nineteen hundred and one,
On the Twenty Second of June
Cortez was captured.

En junio día veintidós
por telégrafo supieron
que a Cortés lo aprehendieron
entre el Sauz y Palafox.

In June, on the twenty-second,
By telegraph it was known
That Cortez had been apprehended
Between El Sauz and Palafox.

Se aprehendió en Campo de Oveja,
de don Abraham de la Garza,
él perdió toda esperanza,
ya en la frontera de Texas.

He was captured in Sheep Camp,
Of Don Abraham de la Garza,
He lost all hope
When he was already on the Texas border.

Que viva nuestra nación
aunque sufriendo revés,
Viva, Gregorio Cortés,
que ha honrado su pabellón.

Long live our country
Although suffering setback,
Long live Gregorio Cortez,
Who has honored his flag.

Murieron tres aprehensores,
por falta en determinar,
y así han podido pagar
los justos por pecadores.

Three captors died
For the lack of discernment,
And thus there have paid
The just for the sinners.

Todito el Río Grande estaba,
resguardando el litoral,
parece que se esperaba,
conflicto internacional.

All the Rio Grande
Was guarding the shore;
It seemed that they were expecting
An international conflict.

La madre patria es hogar,
que hijo e hija ama,
pues México tiene fama,
disciplina militar.

The mother country is a home
That loves both daughter and son,
For Mexico has fame,
Military discipline.

Cortés a Morris mató,
la pistola que sirvió,
por otra luego cambió
a un amigo que encontró.

Cortez killed Morris;
The pistol that was used
He exchanged for another
With a friend that he met.

Su coche a tiro tomó,
toda esta advertencia tuvo,
tres millas y media anduvo
y allí se apeó y amarró.

His coach and team [?] he took,
He was careful to do all this;
He rode three miles and a half
And then got down and tied up.

De América se nación,
ha sufrido este revés,
pues nuestro hermano Cortés
ha honrado su pabellón.

Of America her nation
Has suffered this setback,
For our brother Cortez
Has honored his flag.

Se oyen de Cortés querellas
lamentándose al Creador,
el pabellón tricolor
idéntico a las estrellas.

From Cortez are heard complaints,
Lamenting to the Creator,
The tricolor flag,
Identical to the stars.

Gregorio Cortés venía
de incóngnito y lo entregaron,
y así lo determinaron,
porque así les convenia.

Gregorio Cortez was coming
In disguise and he was betrayed;
Thus it was arranged,
Because it was to their interest.

La grande alarma que hoy pasa
en San Antonio, Laredo,
por el gran furor y miedo,
querían acabar la raza.

The great alarm that now happens,
In San Antonio, Laredo,
From the great fury and fear
They wanted to exterminate our people.

Llegó a casa de Robledo,
allí con él conversó,
nada de esto les contó,
porque no tuvieron miedo.

He got to Robledo's house,
There he conversed with him;
He told them nothing of this,
So they wouldn't be afraid.

Glover aquí lo asaltó,
descalzo salió de aquí,
volvio por calzado ahi,
y a Glover muerto encontró.

Glover surprised him here,
Barefoot he went out of here;
He returned for his shoes
And found Glover dead.

A Cortés llegan con fallos,
siendo integro mexicano.
Diciendo:-¿Cortés y hermano
son ladrones de a caballo?

To Cortez they come with judgments,
Being an upright Mexican,
Saying, "Cortez and brother
Are thieves on horseback?"

¡Dios de mí tenga clemencia
adiós, esposa, ay de mí!
por cincuenta años salí
sentenciado, a penitencia.

May God on me have mercy,
Farewell, wife, woe is me!
For fifty years I departed,
Sentenced to the penitentiary.

Así difundió su amor,
nuestro Redentor Jesús.
Gracias mil, don Pablo Cruz,
Editor "DEL REGIDOR".

Thus he diffuse His love,
Jesus, our Redeemer;
A thousand thanks, Don Pablo Cruz,
Editor of El Regidor.

Pablo Cruz se distinguió,
como íntegro mexicano,
este prominente hermano
que su ayuda me impartió.

Pablo Cruz distinguished himself
As an upright Mexican,
This prominent brother
Who gave me his help.

Su indulgente Redacción
y su unión confraternal,
con su luz intelectual,
él abrió una suscripcion.

His indulgent Staff
And his confraternal union,
With his intellectual light,
He began a subscription.

Participo esta noticia,
a gente culta y honrada...
los de lista enumerada,
la suerte le sea propicia.

I make this news known
To cultured and honest people;
Those on the numbered list-
May fortunate be propitious to them.

¡Y aquí acaba de una vez,
la desgracia lamentado!...
Aquí se acaba cantado
el Corrido de Gregorio Cortés.

And here ends at once,
This misfortune lamenting!...
This is the end of the singing
Of the ballad of Gregorio Cortez.
