History of Contrabando and Corridos

Corridos have a wide range of topics and one in particular is the topic about contraband and trafficking. When one hears these words one would first think of drugs and weapons. They also think of people trafficking into the United States. Many people also believe that the United States is a victim of the smuggling of contraband. No one would ever think that U.S. would ever have trafficked into Latin America first. In the 1800's United States smuggled textiles into Mexico. Many people say that Latin Americans are the ones who started smuggling illegal contraband into the other countries. This has been proven to be wrong even though people do not like to admit it. One of the corridos that is represents this time is the corrido "Mariano Resendez"

During the 1920's the smuggling into the United States begins. The contraband that was smuggled in was Alcohol. This event began because of the prohibition act in the United States. The people who were doing this were called Tequileros. In the U.S. you would know them moon shiners. During this time we can start to see corridos about these events. One example of these corridos is the songs. "Los Tequileros"

In the late 1960's and early 1970's you begin to see a different type of corrido. These corridos are about narcotics and narcotráficos, and drug lords. Songs like "Contrabando y traición" and "Pacas de a Kilo" by Los Tigres del Norte are very common. People didn't see drug lords as bad people. They were thought to be doing nothing wrong. In many cases the drug lords gave back to the community and were very involved. Because of this people didn't mind so much about what happened instead they approved of it.
