DESCRIPTION:
This course will study the major authors and trends in Spanish-American Literature from modernismo to the present day. It will include literature of the Mexican Revolution, the Boom of Latin American narrative, the genre of the fantastic and contemporary women authors. Writers will be presented in their social and historical context.

Additional Information
ATTENDANCE: Class participation is essential for this course. More than three unexcused absences will result in the loss of 1 pt. off the grade per absence. Legitimate grounds for absence are: (1) pre-arranged, university sponsored activities; (2) your own illness; (3) death or severe illness in your immediate family. In the case of illness or death, written proof will be required. In all cases, it is necessary to contact me in advance in order for your absence to be excused.
ASSIGNMENTS: All work is due on the dates indicated in the Plan. according to the following conditions: late work will be marked down by 10% of the grade earned for each day past the due date. Exceptions will be made only in the case of an excused absence.
PREPARATION: Because time is limited, and in-class discussion vital, the student is expected to read assignments carefully before each class. It is often helpful to scan the text once before engaging in a close reading. Read the introductory passages, skim the main body, and search for the author's main points and conclusions, identifying particularly interesting or challenging sections. Formulate the questions that you want to ask of the text, and then return to a careful reading, concentrating on the points that you have outlined. Do not be afraid to consult your dictionary, particularly on the second reading. Jot down your reactions to and questions about the text, so that you can bring them up in the class discussion.
Be prepared to answer questions on the readings in class because this is a normal part of course participation which is reflected in your final grade.
