Dictionary fomr of verb te-form of verb + いる ta-form of verb (plain past)	+	ところ（です）
to be about to ... Dictionary fomr of verb + ところ(です)	食べるところです。 I am about to eat.
In the midst of doing... te-form of verb + いる + ところ(です)	食べているところです。 I am eating right now.
have just done ta-form of verb (plain past) + ところ(です)	食べたところです。 I have just finished eating.

日本語を勉強しているところです。
I am studying JPN at this moment.

日本語を勉強しています。
1. I am studying JPN (now).
2. I am taking JPN classes.

compare: 〜たところ (very short time ago) 　vs　〜たばかり (a relatively short time ago)
今、日本からかえって来たところなんです。 I just came back from Japan (right now).	先週日本からかえって来たばかりなんです。 I just came back from Japan last week.
