私が小さかった頃 (ころつ) 、うちの庭の 真 (ま) ん中に大きな木があった。松 (まつ) と違って、そんなに高くなくて、形はまさに傘 (かさ) のようで、遠くから見れば地上に落ちている草の帽子 (ぼうし) みたいだった。思い出の中のその木は、いつも緑 (みどり) でいっぱいだった。 秋になって、その枝 (えだ) に黄色い果実 (かじつ) がなった時、長い枝は地に垂 (た) れて、木は緑と金色の小屋 (こや) になった。冬が来ると、雪が木の上に積 (つ) もって、木は雪の山にも見えた。日本語には動物が使われている言葉がたくさんある。動物の中で一番多く出てくるのは猫のようだ。

　その頃、私は祖父母 (そふぼ) と従姉 (いとこ) と暮 (く) らしていて、年 (とし) の近い従姉と私は仲良 (なかよ) しで、毎日庭で遊 (ぶ) のが好きだった。ある時には枯 (か) れた木 (こ) の葉 (は) を集めて、それに火をつけたり、ある時には木に登って、鳥の巣 (す) を探 (さが) したり、雪が降 (ふ) った日には木の下で遊んだりしたこともあった。私の幼 (おさな) い頃の思い出はその木に関 (かん) する事ばかりだ。

何時 (いつ) のことだったのかはもう覚えていないが、その木が家の庭から突然 (とつぜん) 消えた。祖父の話ではその木はもうずいぶん古かったらしい。その事があってからまもなく、従姉は他の町に行き、私も両親と一緒 (いっしょ) に暮らすことになった。

　いまでも台湾 (たいわん) に帰った時に、従姉と祖父母とは会う。そして、その木の事は小さかった頃の思い出と共に今でも忘れられない、私にとって一番懐 (なつ) かしいことである。
