A three-page contract with a Swedish company was expanded to twenty-four pages when the same contract was extended to an American company. Just this example of Juan Carlos de la Osa alone confirms the perception that North Americans are much more litigious. Even more interesting is his observation that North American companies require "culturally strange" topics to be included in the contracts, such as comments about immoral conduct, use of alcohol, or drugs, etc. This topic relates to previous questions about the role of lawyers in negotiation processes. North Americans include lawyers in the actual negotiation processes where in other cultures lawyers enter the picture after the negotiations. Rosa María Maymí laments that increasingly legal issue are more necessary and that perhaps Americans are simply ahead of others in this area. The complexity of international business requires more detailed contracts.
