In China, they not only tell you what your food is going to be, they show you pictures in the menu. I asked our hosts at Kitco if this was only for places frequented by Westerners, and they said it was actually a ubiquitous practice in China. Very polite.
The pictures made it much easier to order and avoided any confusion with the language barrier. I also like their custom of one person ordering for the whole table. It makes the decision process much easier and most dishes were served family style anyway.
