The presence of this troop of soldiers was a reminder that the Chinese government was very powerful and ubiquitous. I found it interesting that they checked the Chinese tourists before going into the Forbidden City but did not check Americans. The government obviously wants to maintain their position of authority specifically over the Chinese citizens.
