Description

Sales people in China tended to be quite aggressive. In fact, given the high competition, they would use many sales techniques, we would consider inappropriate: holding things in your face, getting in front of you, grabbing your hand, etc. The night market saw a lot of non verbals and aggressive sales techniques. Also given lack of Chinese skills, we'd be forced to order by pointing and using fingers to describe how many items. The food night market was a great example.

The non-verbal in a shopping

The non-verbal in a shopping setting was astonishing to me. I had a similar experience at the pearl market. Many of the women on the bag floor grabbed my arms and pulled me to their booth - back and forth! Another woman chased me down the entire floor to try and get me to buy from her. It was a very aggressive sales tactic. I wasn't sure if this is something they do to everyone or just to tourists?
