In Xi'an, there were platforms in the middle of the road for the police to stand on to direct the traffic. They seemed to have a routine of swinging arms and rotating that they used to tell cars where and when to go.
This is amusing - kind of looks like they're center stage in a circus production! I guess it protects them from getting hit by cars though.
I think this is a pretty cool picture, but talk about a job that is highly replacable. Most of the world has traffic lights, but in China where labor is cheap and the goverment is all about getting people jobs maybe this makes sense.
