This photo illustrates the history of the city of Lyon, as it expanded from the Roman forum on the top of the hill to the medieval and Renaissance Vieux Lyon below (Saint Jean, the Gothic cathedral) across the Saône river to the town center (Place Bellecour) and beyond the Rhône river to the the modern business district of Part-Dieu ('le crayon').
