Description

Pictured here is a Lyonnaise citizen sporting a hijab, a common headdress required by Muslim law to be worn by women. However, because of the recent passage of French law prohibiting the wearing of similar articles of clothing (e.g., the burqa, the niqab), this photo appears under the Non-Verbal section. French lawmakers claim that for the safety and unity of la République, no citizen is allowed to cover all or even portions of their face, even if mandated by religious law. This woman is an excellent model of the non-verbal conflict between the dominant culture (that of France) and an ever-growing counter-culture (that of Muslim immigrants).
