Description

Pictured here is a popular sticker that was handed out during the Gay Pride parade in Lyon. Literally translating to “Homophobia kills,” the style of this public awareness ‘warning’ of sorts mimics that of the legally mandated warnings attached to every pack of cigarettes in France. Since April 2011, the Minister of Health and the French government have required messages warning the consumer of the side effects of smoking in large, black lettering, identical to the image shown. To be fully understood this sticker requires a specifically French context. Anywhere else in the world, this homophobia “warning” would have been ineffective.
