Description

Seen here is a memorial in Strasbourg recognizing every modern war in which France has taken place. The contextual significance lies in the dates 1952-1962 and the acknowledgement of the Algerian War (À nos morts en Indochine et en Afrique du Nord). Until the early 1990s, the French government didn’t even deem the Algerian conflict a war, simply a “law and order operation.” Therefore, to see an actual monument devoted to the deaths in Algeria, especially considering the shroud of privacy surrounding French domestic matters and the Algerian War in particular, is a big step for the French.
