Living in Japan, you're never far from a shrine. Enoshima, a very small island near Tokyo is an island dedicated to a goddess. The journey to the tip of the island is filled with various traditional processes(purification/worship/etc). One thing that many people do when visiting a shrine is give a 100 yen donation and receive a fortune (Omikuji). The fortune covers various aspects of person like, some provide advice, others even warnings. Those that receive a negative fortune tie it to fence/wall-like structure in hopes of reversing it.
