Description

This picture illustrates the use of “argot,” or slang, in French culture. This hanging flyer was one of many on the bus this week, and at first I was very confused as to why la Fête de la Musique would be advertising with the slogan “100% Pur Boeuf.” As far as I knew, la Fête had absolutely nothing to do with cows or meat, and I heard others in our group wondering about this as well. However, as I discovered later, the definition is kindly provided underneath. A word used for both cows and the beef they provide, “boeuf” can also stand for jam session, as confirmed by Word Reference. I find this slang very interesting, as it seems to have almost no connection to the traditional meaning of the word. However, as the event seems to cater to a younger crowd, I think the use of slang in the slogan was a very smart move, as well as the English translation of the definition for those of us not well-acquainted with French slang.
