Description

At the mouth of the "Vieux Port" in Marseille, there stands this massive mirror, facing down, parallel to the ground, roughly 30 feet tall. It's an extremely modern installment in an area that is exploding with culture and various tourist attractions. At all hours of the day, hundreds of people come to marvel at this huge mirror. A simple idea, it stuns nonetheless. People stare up at themselves, wave their arms at their reflections and take photos. The Vieux Port had been for hundreds of years the main point of access for merchants coming across the Mediterranean into Marseille. Now it's become a smaller fishing port, but still with many vestiges of the past. When we first found ourselves in this area, it came as a bit of a shock. If you walk in nearly any direction for 5 minutes or less, you may find yourself in an extremely rundown part of town, creating a rather unpleasant and unsafe sensation. But here, in the area around the Vieux Port, it's a combination of new developments and old architecture, as exemplified by this piece.
