Dr. Henry Cisneros: the first Chicano mayor of a large metropolitan city

The first Chicano mayor of San Antonio, Henry Cisneros discusses his plans for the city and his views on national issues. Elected by both the Anglos and Mexican Americans of the city, Cisneros says that he is committed to building coalitions in the city council to push through some of his changes. After one year in office, Cisneros addresses some of the privileges and possibilities associated with his position.

He discusses some of the promises he made during his campaign, including his commitment to raising incomes and creating long-term jobs. He also discusses some of the flaws with the practice of supply-side economics, arguing that his administration will focus on a local supply side approach that is more interventionist and committed to training people for new jobs, locating industry in older neighborhoods and improving elementary education. He also discusses his desire to integrate the Hispanic movement into American life.

The interview concludes with a discussion of immigration in San Antonio and the nation. Cisneros says that undocumented immigration is a reality for San Antonio and that immigration laws are unenforceable. He argues that society needs to think about how to relate to immigrants and their products.
