Minority Admissions after the Bakke case

Dr. Isabel Pritchard, a visiting professor of government at the University of Texas at Austin, discusses the current state of affirmative action programs and the implications of the Bakke suit against the University of California System. Pritchard explains that because the UC system’s affirmative action program was so well known and nationally scrutinized, it became a prime target for a backlash against it. Although Pritchard, who worked for many years in the UC system, saw very little evidence of substantial changes in hiring or admission practices that would bolster anti-affirmative action activists, the UC system had begun to enact special admissions programs and offer scholarship to try and address the severe underrepresentation of minorities in its universities.

The Bakke Case, in which Allan Bakke claimed he was denied admission to the UC Davis Medical because of the school’s special admissions program for minority students, has already led to some universities and private employers withdrawing their commitment to affirmative action. Pritchard explains that the University does not admit to any prior discrimination and it claims that the program seeks to address the lack of physicians in minority communities. She discusses some of the potential outcomes of the case and believes that because of its political implications, the state supreme court will likely send the case back to a lower court in an effort to prolong the issue.
