The Socialist Workers Party and Its Effect on the Chicano

Miguel Pendas, Socialist Worker Party Candidate for U.S. Senate, discusses his campaign and issues affecting Chicano community. Pendas decided to run for senator because he found that neither democrats nor republicans spoke on behalf of working people and Chicanos, and instead promotes the interests of big business. He argues that despite the efforts of the Chicano Movement, Chicanos still earn less than Anglos, and are still shut out of good paying jobs. For Chicanas, he argues, the situation is much worse. Moreover, the government is contributing to discrimination and racism by blaming high unemployment and other social ills on Mexican illegal immigrants. Pendas also argues that instead of improving conditions at home, the government is spending money on defense and the military to meddle in the affairs of other countries. Pendas argues that his rivals for the senate: Robert Krueger and John Tower continue these policies.

Although he believes socialists will not win elections right now, he argues that they have impacted political life by being at the forefront of important social movements, including the anti-war campaign and bilingual education. He believes their real political contribution lies in the activism and hopes that in time they will win more votes. For the future, they will continue organizing workers and Chicanos to build a socialist movement.
