Lisa López: Profile of a Chicana Singer
Linda Fregoso speaks with Chicana singer Lisa Lopez about her career and aspirations. Lopez got her start in music as a young child, playing in her father’s band and learning about different styles of music. She recorded her first song when she was 13, and the now 18 year old singer discusses what it was like attending school and recording music on the side. She explains how her music complicated her relationships and made her grow up fast, but there were also some advantages, including recording several big hits. Her most popular song, Si Quieres Verme Llorar, came out when she was still in High School, and thrust her into the limelight and she talks about some of the artists she has sung with and shows on which she has performed.
Fregoso explains that Lopez has had significant success with both Chicano and Latin American audiences and Lopez discusses why her style and music might be appealing to so many different people. Lopez then talks about how she is still adjusting to her newfound fame and she discusses some of its drawbacks. She also talks about her love for performing and connecting with her diverse audience.
Lopez then discusses the social issues that concern her, including war and the economy. Lopez also writes poetry and she discusses some of the themes it explores. Her latest LP will be released in 1982, and Lopez hopes to continue making music and helping other Chicanos break into the music industry.
