Observation:

You may notice that Portuguese words frequently resemble their Latin root more than the Spanish counterpart. In general Portuguese is thought of as being more conservative, while Spanish was more innovative in its development. In many ways, modern Portuguese looks like Old Spanish. Of course none of this helps if you don't know Latin or Old Spanish, but nevertheless it is interesting. E.g., FORMICA 'ant', FUMUS 'smoke'.
