Observation:

The Spanish diphthong /ue/ is generally pronounced as an open /O / in Portuguese. The timbre is similar to the New England pronunciation of /a/ in "caught the ball."

Whenever an accent mark is required to show stress in Portuguese, an acute accent is used to indicate an open timbre and a circimflex accent is used to indicate a closed timbre.
