Reference to Hume's History of England

Bibliographic Note

David Hume, The History of England from the Invasion of Julius Cæar to the Revolution of 1688, New Edition, Chapter 64, paragraphs 63--81

Bentham spells it `John de Wit', Hume, `John de Witte', but the correct (Dutch) spelling appears to be `Jan de Witt'. There exists a contemporary account of the Temple--de Witt negotiations as well as contemporary biographies of both men, but I have not yet had a chance to consult these works. I hope to be able to add something from the same soon. (Also, Alexander Dumas wrote a novel about de Witt entitled La tulipe noir---The Black Tulip)[Paul Lyon]

This extract from Hume's History was scanned in from the edition printed by Harper and Row, New York, 1879, Volume V, pp. 535--543. Hume's History was originally published 1754--1757, and the corrected edition quoted here was published in London, 1762.
