Absolute Manage Usage Policy

Absolute Manage (AbMan) is an IT systems management application for both Mac and Windows operating systems in use by Liberal Arts technical support staff.

Liberal Arts Instructional Technology Services (LAITS), as well as other technical support staff in the College of Liberal Arts, use AbMan to make support and administration of computers manageable. With over 4,000 computers in the College of Liberal Arts, tools such as AbMan are essential in making desktop support and computer inventory both efficient and effective.

To protect your privacy, access is limited to your Liberal Arts technical support staff, Liberal Arts IT Managers and the campus Information Security Office. These are professionals who hold Positions of Special Trust. They are bound by policies, ethics and professionalism not to abuse the access or information that AbMan provides. All technical support staff are required to adhere to the Liberal Arts Information Resources Use and Security Policy.

Psychology (PSY), the Center for Perceptual Systems (CPS), Sociology (SOC), Population Research Center (PRC), the Division of Rhetoric and Writing (DRW), and the University Writing Center (UWC) also may use AbMan for some of their support functions. They are bound by these same policies.

AbMan is used for several purposes:

Computer Inventory

The primary usage of AbMan is to help us maintain an inventory of the computers in the college. AbMan can provide details about a computer's resources, such as the amount of memory and processor speed. This information is useful to technical support staff when resolving technical issues or determining which computers to upgrade or replace. In addition, AbMan is used as the authoritative record for computer assignment, as well as its recorded location.

Software Updates

AbMan can be used to push out new software to a group of computers. This is useful in administering computer labs and is much more efficient than manually installing the software from a disc onto each computer. Technical support staff will push critical software updates to faculty and staff computers when deemed necessary, but in normal operation the usage of this feature will be limited to the request of the user.

Remote Support

The tool can also be used to remotely support computers. Using AbMan, technical support staff are able, with your consent, to view your screen as you see it and assist you with resolving technical issues. Remotely viewing a computer is only performed with the consent of the user. Finding details about which websites a user visits or what is contained within personal files or email is technically possible. However, this would violate the policies and ethics of our support professional positions. It is our policy to respect your privacy and our commitment to you not to abuse our access to your computer.

  • We promise not to use AbMan to peruse your personal files, email, or the websites you visit.
  • The version of AbMan we deploy cannot access or control your computer camera, and we promise not to use any other software to access or control your computer camera.
  • We promise not to use AbMan to remotely access your computer without your consent.
  • We promise to uphold our Positions of Special Trust and hold anyone accountable who abuses this authority.
