Tristan and Isolde prelude pt. 5

The prelude as a series of tension/relapse cycles is cyclic in form, always returning to a variant of the desire music. In spite of the lovers' striving to escape their endless torment, their relapse into the desire music after the climax would seem to suggest the impossibility of escaping desire. At least they have glimpsed the path to endless love, viz. night-death.
