Quiz 3A: Name ___________________________________ UT EID ______________________
1. What is production for final demand? If feasible, why is it more efficient than production for inventory?
Production for final demand, or BTO, is
when once a confirmed order for products is received, products are built (not
before). The more customizable a product (Dell computers) or the greater the loss in return on investment due to delay
in sales, the more the product is a candidate for BTO.
If feasible, it is more efficient
than production for inventory because it reduces inventory costs and offers a return
on investment when the product is produced, rather than only on when sold.
2. A. What is CAE? Give an example? How does CAE increase the efficiency of the design process?
CAE is ÒComputer Assisted Engineering.Ó
An important CAE tool in mechanical and
aeronautical engineering is finite element analysis that computes stress on
physical objects. One of the many CAE tasks in designing an aircraft is
determining the lift and drag characteristics of the wing. Hanley Innovations
provides software to analyze model airplane airfoils on a PC. (Accurate the
simulations compared to wind tunnel data). NASA's Virtual Windtunnel
shows how visualization increases the power of a CAE tool.
CAE
improves the efficiency of the design process because an engineer can test a
design without having to build a model.
