Tyler Fleming

Tyler Fleming is a doctoral candidate in African history at the University of Texas at Austin.  His research focuses on popular culture, specifically jazz music and theatre, in South Africa during the 1950s and 1960s.  Tyler has been published in numerous publications.  His most recent is “Africa’s Media Empire: Drum’s Expansion to Nigeria” (2005) in History in Africa.  Over the span of his graduate career, Tyler has received numerous fellowships and awards, including a Summer FLAS (2003), a Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad Grant for Intermediate-Advanced Intensive Zulu (2004) and the Patrice Lumumba Fellowship for Research in African History from the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for African and African American Studies (2004, 2005 and 2007).  Most recently, he spent a year (2005-2006) in Johannesburg on a Fulbright IIE fellowship conducting research for his dissertation.
