The Akoko as a Factor in Yoruba-Edo Relations |
The Akoko occupy a frontier zone between Ondo and Edo states in modern Nigeria. They are split between the two states and they speak tongues that relate to both Edo and Yoruba languages. The ones in Ondo State are to be found in north-east Yorubaland and they are called Akoko-Yoruba. Those in Edo State are called Akoko-Edo and they occupy the north-western part of Edo State. Apart from language, there are many other areas where the Akoko share aspects of the cultures of the Yorube and Edo,ranging from marriage to festivals. This paper will explore the origins of the spread of the Akoko across Yoruba and Edo lands and examine the nature and dimensions of their cultural borrowings from the two groups. It also hopes to use the understanding of the Akoko experience to shed light on the controversial issue of the relationship between the Edo and Yoruba up to about 1970. |
