The Collapse of African Values: Autochtonous Epistemological and Communication Modes to the Rescue |
Today, Africa is plagued with various physical , social and political maladies . Since the attainment of pseudo-independence by most African nations, the continent has witnessed acute spiritual, social, political, moral and psychological traumas. In Nigeria, for instance, cases of embezzlement, politicat instability, armed robbery, arson, child abuse and trafficking, prostitution, gangsterism etc are on the increase. To stem the growth of these maladies, the people are being advised to "turn to God", hence the proliferation of religious houses -churches and Mosques in the Country. Yet the Country has had no respite! This paper therefore, seeks to show that these problems can be solved through an understanding and application of autochthonous epistemological and communication modes. It shall show how the festivals, proverbs, songs and symbols of the Yoruba have been employed to solve similar problems in the past and even today among the rural populace in western Nigeria. |
